Reviews
First visit to this restaurant. I made reservations for 7:30pm on Saturday. Not busy at all but there was some wintry weather. Atmosphere was okay. Not cozy or anything special. For a first visit I would expect recommendations, specials to be announced etc. We received none of that. Ordered some tea, a lot to look at on the menu. We were asked on 3 separate occasions if we were ready to order. We were not. Finally we made our choices and ordered. Our starter AND all of our entrees came out together. At that point we were told it was last call and if we needed anything else we had to order it at that point. We declined but ordered a dessert from the menu. Our starter was pretty good. The assorted sushi that we ordered was not good at all. Neither of us finished and didn't not take it to go. The sushi was mushy and flavorless. Even the dessert seemed like it was something pulled out of the freezer and served as is. Also, we believe that some stomach upset the following days, was due to this "meal". Very disappointed in the service, value and quality. We won't visit again.
I've been to Kumo a handful of times and never wrote a review yet because I wasn't sure how I felt about my experiences overall. However, dinner tonight really solidified my thoughts. I had reserved a table for a party of 8 a week in advance. I called a few days later to see if I could add another table of 4 to the group, since 8 was the max for a table. The woman taking my call was very rude off the bat and said at first she could not accommodate another table of 4 under my name even though I knew there were tables available. She then complied a bit and said she could reserve another table of 4 under my name. I thanked her and asked if there was any way that table could be close to the table of 8. She said she couldn't guarantee that and I said, "Okay, thank you. That's fine." She then very unnecessarily quipped, "I hope there's not an argument about it tonight." WHAT ON EARTH? I never even implied an argument or was argumentative in my tone. I had actually told her it was fine if the table of 4 wasn't close to the table of 8.
When everyone all arrived and got seated, I realized that the table of 4 was the next table over from the table of 8. However, the table of 4 was still separate and a good 10-12 feet away. For the table of 4, two of my friends showed up, so I asked if they could bring their seats over or push the table to be adjacent to the table of 8. The same woman was rude and argumentative and said that could not be done whatsoever. It was so sad that my two friends had to be ostracized from everyone else, and they virtually ate by themselves since they weren't within earshot of our table. Kumo won't be getting my business again.
FYI- Kumo has been really skimping out on some of their orders. The pictures are both of the tuna avocado salad app- one noticeably much more generous in portion and ingredients than the other (and these were taken only one month apart)…
My husband and I needed some food after a long day of hiking and this spot was on our way to our hotel. Sushi is always a good idea.
We shared:
- Tuna Madness Roll
- Dancing Lobster Roll
- Sweet Heart Roll
- Maple Roll
- Fire Roll
- Toronto Roll
- Caribbean Roll
All of it was delicious. There wasn't a bad roll in the bunch. It was also reasonably priced which isn't always easy to find with sushi.
I will definitely be back next time I'm traveling in the area.
I love this place the inside is amazing and everything Tate very fresh I went during Christmas time so it was VERY busy I recommend the lady Gaga roll and the volcano roll!!
Wonderful! They have an entire page for gluten free food. Waiter was so sweet with my gluten sensitivity. He even gave me my own bottle of GF soy sauce! It was so sweet of him.
This is our go to sushi place. The staff is extremely helpful. Great family run business. Food is always super fresh and made in front of you at the sushi bar. Prices are very reasonable! The Kiss appetizer roll is very light (my favorite! Wrapped in cucumber instead of rice paper) our other favorites are the Caterpillar roll, Volcano roll, and the Golden flame. If you plan on visiting on the weekend call ahead to make a reservation, they get packed! I would definitely recommend eating here!!
We’ve been ordering here for about a year and a half and since the start of the year, the size of the rolls has gotten smaller. Before that, they were consistently a large size and shape (the center contents/fish specifically), but have shrunk considerably (again, the center contents/fish part of the roll)—and on top of that, even within the same order, the pieces are different sizes. This now happens more often than it doesn’t. Sometimes we get rolls how they used to be but it’s uncommon.
Even so, it’s close by so we kept giving it a try. That is until the last order a few weeks back—that was our last.
In a year and a half, we’ve only expressed an issue twice. And only when the rolls exceeded a certain level of subpar. We know restaurants are in a tough spot with COVID so gave the benefit of the doubt. We weren’t always happy with our orders but again, let it go unless they were super off the mark.
A few months back, when we called about the one order, the owner/manager was instantly defensive, cutting us off, acting like we didn’t understand how sushi was made, that we weren’t seeing things accurately, that we somehow misunderstood. He denied any possibility that what we said was true.
Then this last time (a few weeks ago), it was poor enough quality again (like actually semi empty rolls), that we reluctantly called to say something. And sure enough, the owner/manager did the same thing.
He was immediately defensive, cut me off when talking, wouldn't listen to the problem, nor would he even consider the possibility that our order wasn’t up to standard. No matter what I said, he insisted that I wasn’t seeing things accurately—that I didn't know how sushi was made, that the rice portion might be smaller (even though I repeatedly told him it was the center filling), etc. I even offered to drive the order back to him.
Overall, just more denial, gaslighting, rudeness, and acting like we were lying. It's such a strange thing to do—most restaurants just believe the customer, especially when you order from the regularly and don't complain.
When he couldn’t convince me that I wasn’t seeing things accurately, he actually asked to speak to my boyfriend.
So all this to say, instead of just accepting the complaint as true and valid, believing a regular customer, and just remaking the order (or even if not, at least accepting the feedback), he chose to argue, not help, and deny any possibility that there was a legitimate issue. Again, we order from them anywhere from weekly to a few times per week without complaint. I also don't leave reviews but this called for it.
If he stopped to do the math, it would’ve actually been cheaper for him to not argue and just remake/refund the order and keep a regular customer instead of losing repeat business. Not only were we dining with them for approaching two years, but often several times a week.
And please know in advance that when/if he replies to this post, he didn’t offer any help or assistance and no, I didn’t misunderstand him. I don’t expect him to understand how rude he was and it’s not worth it to engage. But like others have written (there are several that also talk about the rudeness), the food is fresh and good here, but the customer service is awful.
I’ll post pictures later.
Edit: After coming back to add pictures, I noticed that right after my review, several new ones have popped up commenting on how nice the owners are and the size of the rolls—the exact issues in this review. One person explicitly comments on this review saying it's "completely wrong." I don't know this person, they've never sat at my table/ordered takeout with me, so I'm not sure how they're qualified to tell me it's "wrong," having never seen my food firsthand. I've been ordering here weekly or more for almost 2 years. Stick to your own experience.
I suspect they're posting fake reviews or are soliciting them in response to this one. Very dishonest just like mine and others’ experience here. Let people have their valid experiences instead of continuing to manipulate the situation.
MY FAVORITE SUSHI PLACE !!! Very clean place. excellent customer service from the moment you walk into the establishment. wide variety on the belt! Everything we grabbed was very fresh and service was great with a packed house
